Dartmouth town is especially rich in buildings of historic and architectural interest, including the 17th century Butterwalk. Art galleries and fascinating shops abound in Foss Street to while away an hour or two. The Britannia Royal Naval College, prominent on the hillside, offers guided tours celebrating their centenary in 2005.

Pleasure boat trips are a favourite pastime, either upstream where much of the renowned TV series "The Onedin Line" was filmed, or along the coast to view the rugged coastline and watch grey seals. Don't miss a visit to Dartmouth Museum and the Newcomen Engine House, which is also home to the Dartmouth Tourist Information Centre.

Noted local photographers Tim Stanger & Gordon Thomas have provided the images used on our web site. For a further selection of local photographs

The Red Arrows
The red arrows performing for the Dartmouth Royal Regatta. Quite a difference from the first Regatta in 1822 with three sailing races, one six-oared gig race, and a military band played out at the Dartmouth Castle and 120 attended a ball.

Britannia Royal Naval College
High on a hill above the town of Dartmouth the Britannia Royal Naval College has been training Royal Naval officers on this site since 1905. Training in Dartmouth goes back to 1863, when the old wooden hull HMS Britannia was first moored in the River Dart.

Dartmouth Castle
Jutting out at the entrance to the Dart estuary, this well-positioned castle was one of the earliest in England specifically designed to carry guns. Construction began in the late 15th century when the local merchants felt vulnerable to possible invasion, and wanted a way to protect their warehouses and cargoes.

Historic Dartmouth
Explore the historic streets of Dartmouth. Wander through the quaint lanes and search out the facinating shops and restaurants.
