Thurlestone Golf Club (27 min) 01548 560405
Situated on a coastal strip of down land turf the setting of this 100 year old club has been favourable compared on television by Peter Allis, with the famous Pebble Beach course in Florida. This nationally known, popular course has a well deserved reputation for excellence and will provide both the lower and higher handicap golfers with a stern, yet enjoyable test of golf.

Churston Golf Club (28 min) 01803 842751
One of the great attractions of “The Churston Golf Course” is its delightful situation on the top of the cliffs at the western end of Torbay. Churston lays mid way between Brixham and Paignton and just over six miles from Torquay so, from the point of view accessibility its position is ideal. The course is laid out on a long strip of typical down-land turf that stretches westward along the cliffs towards Brixham. The ground is boldly undulating in character, with no lack of natural features, and the surroundings are much more richly diversified than are usually to be found on courses near the cliffs. The wide variety of views to be seen from different parts of the course is truly wonderful. On the inland side we have the woods and the rich colouring of the Devon Hills. From the tenth green at the far end, we have a fascinating view of Brixham Harbour, which is worth travelling miles to see, and on our homeward journey along the side of the course nearest the sea we find ourselves gazing over the whole sweep of Torbay with its red and white cliffs, Torquay itself, and a succession of headlands beyond, as far as Teignmouth. The total length of the course is 6208 yards, with a S.S.S. of 70. There are two really long holes of 557 and 516 yards, so even the tigers will find that there is plenty of scope for good, honest hard hitting. Most of the par four holes are well within the two shot distance for the average player. Churston calls for a great variety of shots, but the holiday golfer will find from the point of view of length, it does not provide too exacting a test.

Newton Abbot Golf Club (40 min) 01626 352460
Although the present Golf Club dates from 1931 the origins can be traced back to 1894 when Major Harold St Maur created a 9- hole course on his own estate, which was interwoven with the Stover pheasant shoot. The present trolley shed was the pheasant-rearing shed! In 1931 work commenced on constructing a James Braid designed golf course at the present location. Situated very close to the A38 Plymouth Expressway and 3 miles north of Newton Abbot, Stover Golf Club is one of the most popular courses in South Devon. Visitors are most welcome and will appreciate the setting, warm welcome and friendly atmosphere of the Club. Set in parkland with some of the prettiest golf holes in Devon. Extensive, mature woodlands and water, feature on a number of holes and whilst the 5800 yards, par 69, is not long, it provides an interesting and enjoyable challenge to golfers of all abilities. The back 9 holes are narrow and good course management is essential. A flat easy-walking course, it is popular with players of more senior years who can play an additional 9 or 18 holes without undue problems – golf buggies are neither permitted or necessary.
Dinnaton Sporting & Country Club (40 min) 01752 892512

Teign Valley Golf Club (50 min) 01647 253026
Known as one of the friendliest Golf Clubs in Devon, Teign Valley welcomes visitors every day of the week. Cheery, friendly and lively is the spirit that this privately owned club has developed. There is plenty of opportunity for visitor golf - especially during the week. You will certainly find us informal, relaxed, and friendly but very protective of our dress standards! All golfers are expected to look the part - smart, tailored attire with proper golf shoes. No handicap certificate is required, but golfing experience and 'manners' are essential if you and others are to have a good game.
Teignmouth Golf Club (51 min) 01626 777070
Dating back to 1924 and designed by Dr Alister Mackenzie, the architect of the Augusta National Golf Course in Georgia U.S.A. on which the renowned annual U.S. Masters Golf Championship is played. Visitors are welcome all year round and are required to pay green fees on entry. Set out on the high plateau of Little Haldon, over 800 feet above sea level, the course is unique in its situation, with breathtaking and extensive views. From the outgoing half we look down on Teignmouth itself, over the Teign estuary to the Devon shore as far as Berry Head. From the inward holes we have a fantastic view of the Exe estuary, and can follow the eastward coastline as far as Portland Bill. To the west lies Dartmoor, rising in the far distance into the grey bastions of the Tors, Hay, Saddle and Rippon, while to the north lays the hinterland of Devon and the Blackdown Hills. Our designer, Dr C. A. MacKenzie, was renowned for making natural undulations conform to the character of the ground without changing its natural beauty. Some of the holes at Teignmouth are regarded as the best he ever did. His idea of a golf course was that it should be pleasurable, that bunkers should be strategic not penal, and he was quoted as saying "make it look hard and play easy if the player uses his brains"! The course is maintained to the highest standard, while respecting the natural beauty of the surroundings and heather conservation.
